Visit Fort Sumter National Monument
Of all the historically famous locations in Charleston, Fort Sumter is probably at the top of the list. In 1861, Confederate forces took Fort Sumter, officially kicking off the Civil War. Today, the Fort stands as a memorial to that famous battle in one of the most infamous wars in American history. Since the fort is only accessible by boat, visiting times are limited throughout the year. The National Parks Service website has a schedule showcasing which days the boat runs, as well as the times when you can visit the fort. Make it a full day and plan to visit the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier and Maritime Museum, South Carolina’s largest museum before or after your Fort Sumter tour. Special discounts offered for active and retired military.
Relax at Waterfront Park
Slow down and take a moment to relax at Downtown Charleston's Waterfront Park. Just a few short blocks from Meeting Street, off of East Bay Street, Waterfront Park is a city favorite for locals and tourists alike.
