Tips to declutter your homeAt any given moment, our homes can be a mess. Hoping no one drops by and sees your mess, the best cure for this dread is to declutter. Whether you are thinking about selling your home soon or not, decluttering is vital every year. There are all sorts of tips to declutter your home. However, it may seem daunting. We at Infinity Realty love helping our clients and future clients in every manner. Read on to see our top tricks and tips to declutter your home in no time!

Tip #1: Start small! Just like Rome wasn’t built in a day, your home won’t be decluttered in a small amount of time. Nothing is more defeating than starting a project like this and not being able to finish it. Find a space you know you can conquer. Even if it is 1 drawer in 1 room, it’s better to finish a small project.

Tip #2: Only devote a little bit of time! In combination with our first tip, only clean for a few minutes. Set a timer for 10, 15, or 20 minutes and see what you can get done. When faced with the looming threat of cleaning for hours, we will always put it off. However, so much can get done in just a short amount of time. After you are done, take a break and start again.

Tip #3: Don’t waste your money! Before you go out and buy a bunch of organizational boxes, declutter. You may realize you need less than you thought or that you need something different. Take the time to de-stash and simplify before you buy.

Tip #4: Really analyze what you have! One of our top tips to declutter your home is to analyze what you have. You probably have heard this in many forms. It can be useful in your closet, your decor, and so much more. When it comes to decor, if you look at it and it doesn’t make you happy, get rid of it. We hold on to broken and worn out things for far too long.

Tip #5: Tackle your closet! In conjunction with our last tip, control your closet. Even in spacious closets, we have stuffed them full of clothes. Items we will never wear again based on size or style. Things that have holes in them but we hang on to them. Or items that we deem too fancy to wear on a daily basis. There are so many mindsets to help with this. The first was made popular by Oprah, the hanger experiment. Take all of your clothes and hand them up backward. When you wear an item and put it back, hang it normally. In a few months, you will see what you truly wear. You can also take a tip from Jennifer Scott’s 10 item wardrobe. Take a hard look at your clothes and see what is right for you.

Tip #6: Find storage in unlikely places! Whether you live in a large home or a smaller one, storage can be useful and beautiful. Show off your plates with open shelving in your kitchen. Keep the kid’s toys away in a stunning piece of furniture.

Tip #7: Make a list! When you are first trying out these tips to declutter your home, it may all seem overwhelming. If your main list seems too long, break it up by room. Having shorter lists will make you feel more accomplished as you begin to check off each item.

Tip #8: Keep, Toss, and Store! The best way to organize what you have is to make a choice, keep, toss, or store. When you are faced with only 3 options, you will quickly see your items in a new light. Be sure to donate any items that others may be able to use!

Tip #9: Stay clutter free! You may be wondering, how do I stay clutter free? The best way is to understand the root of the problem, homelessness. We all have our hot spots in our homes. The entryway table, where mail, keys, cash, and shoes pile up. For others, it may be the kitchen counters. Book bags, food, and more can make it seem a mess. Identify your hot spots and keep them tidy!

Tip #10: Good enough is enough! You may want your home to be clutter free all the time and ready to grace the pages of any magazine. One thing to realize is that you live in your home. Magazine homes are staged. It takes time to cultivate the look and style that you want. Keep things simple and you will be on your way!
