There is plenty to do & see in Charleston, South Carolina, but one of our largest attractions is the South Carolina Aquarium. Who doesn’t love a trip to the aquarium? Children love it because they have the opportunity to see really cool sea creatures, like sharks & penguins. Parents & adults love it because aquariums are informative & educational, plus a great way to get out of the house, or to explore if you are visiting! How awesome does it sound to come to an aquarium that’s next to the ocean & has a ton of live, actual sea life? Pretty wild, right?!  We think so too! That’s why we love the South Carolina Aquarium. When you come here, you will find no shortage of fascinating sea exhibits & educational events. Plus, kids will love the chance to see real-life sea critters up close & maybe, even have the chance to interact with them!

What’s Happening at the South Carolina Aquarium:

The Sea Turtle Care Center

Did you know that every species of sea turtle is endangered? That’s one of the many reasons why the Aquarium opened the Sea Turtle Care Center. Thanks to a partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Care Center works to protect & heal injured Sea Turtles. Now, with their newest exhibit, visitors to the aquarium get an in-depth look at how it all works. You will learn what kind of tanks the turtles need, how they are rehabilitated, & what kind of effort goes into acquiring them. They also let the turtles go once they are feeling better, or healed.

Get Up Close with Rays in The Shallows

The Shallows allow aquarium visitors the unique opportunity to get up close & personal to an unusual animal ~ the Manta Rays! Staff is on-site to safely monitor the experience & answer any questions you may have about these majestic sea creatures. Kids especially love the chance to touch the manta rays, & have the opportunity to feed them as well. The manta ray area is right on the harbor, which also gives you a gorgeous view of Charleston, SC. So, if you’re lucky, you may even see a wild dolphin or two jumping around in the harbor.

Marvel at the Great Ocean Tank

Of course, when locals think of the South Carolina Aquarium, they often think of the Great Ocean Tank. It’s so large & impressive it was even featured on an episode of Animal Planet. It’s full of stunning fish & amazing sharks. You’ll definitely have a hard time pulling your kids away from this place!
